Glass dates back to 5000 years and is one of the earliest artificial materials to be invented on earth. The first cut glassware was introduced to Japan via Silk Road. The Edo Kiriko has started its history in the end of Edo period (1834). Kyubei Kagaya, known as a glass transformer, began his career learning European cut glass techniques, and used emery powder and engraved on a surface of glass to produce his own line of work.
The word “kiri-ko” means a person who “cuts things”. At Joyconcept, we mainly carry Edo Kiriko work by Akio Kurokawa, who is known as one of the most established Edo Kiriko artist to date. Our partnership with Akio Kurokawa began 20 years ago during “Nukaga Gallery” years (precursor of Joyconcept) and when he became independent and started his own glass atelier. The collection of Akio Kurokawa’s Edo Kiriko is admittedly one of the most exquisite and superb and cannot be more proud to share our love for his work with everyone.
